A Turnberry rug isn’t just something to walk on. It’s a piece of art underfoot — a tactile, visual anchor to a space that tells a story of heritage, place, and personal taste.
Tucked away in a converted granary on the windswept shores of Turnberry, on Scotland’s southwest coast, a quiet revolution in craftsmanship has been unfolding since 1991. Here, the artisans of Turnberry Rug Works have spent more than three decades mastering the art of bespoke rug-making — producing exquisite, hand-tufted creations that grace everything from Highland cottages to international embassies.
This isn't mass production. This is slow, skilled artistry rooted in people, place, and provenance — values that align perfectly with the spirit of Amazing Britain. For those seeking exceptional quality and deeply considered design, Turnberry Rug Works represents the very best of British craft.
Crafted with Precision, Designed to Last
Every rug at Turnberry is a one-of-a-kind piece, tailored to the vision and requirements of each client. From initial consultation to final inspection, their team guides you through every decision — including design, yarn type, colour palette, shape, and pile height. No two rugs are ever the same.
Whether working with a private homeowner or a luxury hotel, the team maintains close relationships with yarn dyers and suppliers, using only the highest quality wools, silks, linens, and natural fibre viscose. These materials aren’t just beautiful — they’re durable, sustainable, and selected for their longevity and feel.
It's this attention to detail that has earned Turnberry a loyal following among interior designers, architects, and discerning clients across the UK and beyond.
British Craftsmanship on the Global Stage
Turnberry’s bespoke rugs have been commissioned for British embassies around the world, Michelin-starred restaurants, and heritage institutions like the National Trust. One notable project includes a large-scale wall hanging — designed by acclaimed design studio Timorous Beasties — created for the Robert Burns Museum in Alloway.
Closer to home, you’ll find Turnberry rugs in the refined interiors of the Gleneagles Hotel, as well as in private homes and country estates across the British Isles. Each rug is an example of British design at its most thoughtful and intentional — both functional and deeply artistic.
The Art of Making a Turnberry Rug
The production process is a fascinating blend of traditional handcraft and modern precision.
It begins with a canvas stretched onto a custom frame — which can be tailored to fit any space, no matter how grand or intricate. Using projection and careful measurement, the chosen design is sketched onto the backing. Then comes the magic: hand tufting.
Compressed air pushes the yarn through the canvas, guided by a steady hand and a trained eye. Different settings allow for various pile heights and textures. Once the tufting is complete, a backing is applied, and latex is brushed in to secure the structure. The rug is then sheared to the perfect pile height, carved by hand if needed for texture or definition, and finally edged and trimmed to perfection.
Every piece is inspected and approved by Gerry, Turnberry’s long-standing production manager, before receiving its signature stamp — a seal of Scottish quality and craftsmanship.
Signature Collections for Instant Impact
While bespoke work remains the heart of the business, Turnberry Rug Works now also offers a curated collection of ready-to-order designs. These showcase the extraordinary variety possible with hand-tufting — from bold, contemporary patterns to timeless traditional motifs — all made in Scotland to the same rigorous standards as their bespoke creations.
Ideal for those who appreciate artisan quality but prefer a quicker turnaround, these rugs can be ordered directly from the Turnberry website, with pre-selected colourways and sizes designed to suit a range of modern interiors.
With their commitment to handcraft, sustainability, and client collaboration, Turnberry Rug Works continues to fly the flag for British creativity in the global interiors scene.
Trusted by Trade and Design Professionals
For nearly 30 years, Turnberry Rug Works has been a go-to partner for interior designers and architects working on complex and high-end projects. Their deep knowledge of materials, pile structures, and practical considerations (like staircases, fitted areas, or irregular spaces) makes them an invaluable asset during the design process.
Turnaround times can be as short as three to four weeks from final approval, and sample swatches can be created quickly to match exact colour specifications. With the ability to make rugs up to 400 x 700 cm in a single piece — or seamlessly joined for larger areas — Turnberry’s flexibility is a game-changer for ambitious interior schemes.
