To wear or live with a Sian O’Doherty design is to embrace a piece of Wales – its culture, its colours, its sense of place. Her pieces are bold, yet intimate. Local, yet with universal appeal. From heritage to horizon, everything she creates is stitched with passion and purpose.
In a quiet corner of coastal Wales, where rolling hills meet wildflower meadows and the dramatic Pembrokeshire coastline reveals new colours with every tide, you’ll find the studio of award-winning textile artist Sian O’Doherty. A designer whose work is as rich in narrative as it is in colour and texture, Sian is redefining what it means to create fashion and homewares that are not just beautiful, but meaningful.
A proud native of Tenby, Sian draws deeply from her Welsh heritage and the spectacular natural world around her. “I’ve done a little travelling,” she says, “but I can honestly say I would never wish to live anywhere else. Pembrokeshire is incredibly beautiful and relatively unspoilt. For an artist, it’s endlessly inspirational – the vistas change on a daily basis.”
This ever-changing environment has found a vivid and thoughtful expression in Sian’s knitted textile collections, which span garments, accessories and interior décor. From windswept sea cliffs and dramatic strata formations to delicate coastal flora, every piece tells a story rooted in place, heritage and the slow rhythms of nature.
Modern Heritage, Slow Fashion
Sian O’Doherty’s work exemplifies the very best of British slow fashion today. Each item she creates is produced ethically, with sustainability at its core. Her signature style blends a modern, almost playful energy with the time-honoured traditions of Welsh textile craft.
These aren’t simply garments or cushions – they are heirlooms in the making. Bright, joyful colours meet clean lines and bold patterns, resulting in functional pieces that brim with personality. It's no surprise that her designs have featured in publications like Country Living, House & Garden, Embroidery Magazine, and The Telegraph, earning her a devoted following across the UK.
And while each design begins in Pembrokeshire, her work continues to travel, proudly flying the flag for British craftsmanship and creativity around the world.
Craftsmanship Rooted in Culture
Sian’s journey begins at her studio, tucked away on a smallholding in Pembrokeshire where she lives with her husband, daughter, and a charming menagerie of animals – including alpacas. Every piece begins life on a domestic knitting machine, where she painstakingly produces samples that are washed, pressed and refined until they meet her exacting standards.
As demand has grown, Sian has partnered with a small family-run mill in Scotland to help with production – a decision that allows her to balance growth while continuing to innovate and design.
This hands-on approach, combined with a deep connection to Welsh culture, is what makes Sian’s work stand out. “The history of my region and the culture of Wales not only fill me with pride, but also drive me forward,” she explains. “We’ve always been a nation of hard workers, striving for improvement. That’s how I’d like my work to be seen.”
And seen it has been. Sian has been the recipient of numerous accolades including The Textile Society’s Lucienne Day Award, The New Design Britain Fabric Award, and Craft Country Homes and Interiors’ My Country Business Award – recognition of both her technical excellence and artistic vision.
More Than Just a Studio – A Destination
But Sian’s talents don’t stop at design. Her smallholding, Ash Farm, has become a destination in its own right, welcoming visitors from across the UK and beyond. Two charming self-catering units are now available year-round, offering guests a peaceful base from which to explore the natural beauty of Pembrokeshire.
Whether you're here to walk the nearby coastal paths, discover local markets and historic villages, or simply unwind in the company of alpacas, Ash Farm provides a truly memorable escape. And for the creatively curious, the experience can go even deeper – visitors are invited to join craft workshops, where they can learn the techniques behind Sian’s work and take home their own handmade creations.
This winter will also see the return of the much-loved Winter Open Studio, where guests can explore Sian’s collections firsthand, meet the artist herself, and pick up something truly unique for the festive season.
