Ellis Mhairi Cameron

The beauty of Ellis Mhairi Cameron’s work lies not only in its striking aesthetic but also in its philosophy. Her jewellery is sculptural yet wearable, ancient in spirit but modern in form. She champions sustainability by using only recycled gold and traceable stones, and every piece is designed to be handed down — heirlooms of the future.

On the rugged, windswept farmland of the West Highlands, a story of ancient heritage, artistry, and unexpected discovery is being retold — not through books or museums, but through the hands of Scottish-born jeweller Ellis Mhairi Cameron. Her handcrafted fine jewellery, forged in 14ct recycled gold and adorned with traceable diamonds, is a sculptural homage to Scotland’s history — raw, primal, and beautifully imperfect.

A Highland Beginning

Originally from Oban, often called the capital of the West Highlands, Ellis grew up amidst a dramatic seascape and mountainous terrain steeped in clan history. Her family, the Camerons, have lived on the same plot of land since 1502, with tales of fierce loyalty, bloody clan rivalries, and ancient traditions lingering in every stone and stream. This environment — both haunting and inspiring — sowed the seeds of Ellis’s fascination with topophilia, the emotional and spiritual connection between people and place.

As a child, she was immersed in creative play. Her mother, a primary school teacher, ensured the home was filled with paints, fabrics, and materials to explore. Her father, a skilled mechanic, introduced her to the magic of soldering. Watching metal fuse and transform sparked the same awe she would later channel into her craft.

The Shift to Jewellery

After high school, Ellis moved to Glasgow in 2010 to study an art foundation course. Though initially drawn to sculpture and painting, she discovered jewellery design and fell in love with its multidisciplinary nature. "Jewellery let me touch everything I loved — sketching, collaging, sculpture — but on a small, intimate scale," she explains.

She continued her journey at The Glasgow School of Art, earning a BA in Silversmithing and Jewellery, and later moved to London to complete an MA in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins. Her education helped her ground her artistry in both technical skill and conceptual storytelling. A business course at The Goldsmiths’ Centre followed, giving her the tools to launch her eponymous brand in 2018.

Discovery Beneath the Soil

While the Scottish landscape had always been a muse, a remarkable real-life discovery in 2022 brought Ellis's connection to her heritage full circle. During a family-led land clearing on her ancestral farm, a set of standing stones was uncovered. Intrigued, the family consulted archaeologists and brought in metal detectorists. What they found was astonishing: centuries-old artefacts — a clan brooch, a locket, a pin, and even a 16th-century apothecary pot — hidden beneath the soil for over 500 years.

“We thought we’d find an old coin or a nail,” Ellis laughs. “Instead, we uncovered a treasure trove that directly connected us to the lives and hands of our ancestors.”

One standout find was a Cameron clan brooch, engraved with a Gaelic phrase meaning “We come bearing weapons,” a fierce reminder of the region’s clan warfare legacy. The dramatic history — akin to a Highland Game of Thrones — inspired her most recent and deeply personal collection: Legacy.

The Legacy Collection

Rather than replicate the past, Legacy captures the spirit of it — the sense of wonder, erosion, and survival. “I didn’t want the pieces to look like they’d been taken from a museum,” says Ellis. “Instead, I wanted them to feel like they’d just been unearthed — rich with texture, history, and mystery.”

Crafted by hand in her London studio, each piece in the collection is made using traditional techniques like wax carving and casting. The surfaces are rugged, almost geological — shaped to reflect the Highland terrain. Antique-cut diamonds, some set upside-down, mimic the glint of wet stones or the shine of rain on ancient metal. These are jewels that feel alive.

Highlights include the OOAK Legacy cocktail ring (£7,995), stacked with a diamond scatter band shaped like dripping candle wax, and lemon baguette hoops (£7,495) that carry an air of medieval nobility. Every item is forged with a sense of story, place, and permanence.

Ancestry in Gold

The beauty of Ellis Mhairi Cameron’s work lies not only in its striking aesthetic but also in its philosophy. Her jewellery is sculptural yet wearable, ancient in spirit but modern in form. She champions sustainability by using only recycled gold and traceable stones, and every piece is designed to be handed down — heirlooms of the future.

“I believe in the beauty of imperfection, in craftsmanship, in things that feel touched by time,” she says. “Jewellery should tell a story — not just of the maker, but of the place it comes from, and the people it will go on to touch.”

Today, Ellis's work is internationally celebrated. She showcases at Goldsmiths Fair, is stocked by Liberty London, and was recently awarded a bursary by The Goldsmiths’ Company for further engraving study. Her pieces have featured in Vogue, Forbes, and the Financial Times, and her fanbase — particularly in the US — continues to grow.

But at the heart of it all is a woman from the Highlands, shaped by the land beneath her feet, carving gold and diamond into whispers of history.
